After sounding and buoying out the middle ground8ft Big Island, the gun-boats succeeded in getting over, and openedfire on Fort Strong, the work commanding the principal obstruc-tions. The enemy were soon driven from their stronghold. Onthe night of the 20th they sent down two hundred floating torpe-does, but Porter had a strong force of picket boats out, and thetorpedoes were sunk with the musketry. While the navy passed up the river, the troops advanced oneither bank. Cox moved up on the west side to Town Creek,where the last rebel line was connected with Fort Strong (or ).
