There are severalforms of this type of apparatus. Atypical crusher may be essentiallydescribed as follows: The rock is fedinto a large, conical hopper, whichmerges into the body of the appara-tus. - This is also conical in form, theinclination being, however, quitesteep. It is here that the actualcrushing is accomplished. A spiderhaving two or perhaps three armsresting on the inner face of the hop-per furnishes a support over the cen-ter of the crushing compartment. Alarge shaft is suspended verticallyfrom this support. On this shaft inthe region of the crushing chamberis arranged a conical crushing conical surface tapers upwardsand forms, with the downwardly tap- THE CATSKILL AQUEDUCT 447. Now the shafthangs a little out of an exact verti-cal, and in consequence slightly con-tracts the canyon at one point andslightly expands it on the diametric-ally opposite side. Indeed, as onegoes around in either direction fromthe point of maximum expansion, thecanyon gradually narrows to thepoint of minimum size. When the apparatus is in operation, the lowerpart of the shaft is made to swinground a small circle by means ofcertain eccentric arrangements. Theshaft is free to rotate in response tothe frictional influences in the crush-ing compartment. A piece of rockcaught, for example, in the mostcommodious portion of the canyonwould find itself between walls, theinner one of which was rolling and 448 CASSIERS MAGAZINE .
