A plaque commemorating the Hungarian composer and pianist, Bela Bartok (1881,1945) . Through his collection and analytical study of folk music, he was one of the founders of has been chosen as the 2010 European City of Culture. The city is on the southern slopes of the Mecsek Hills and has a sub-Mediterranean climate. Settled by Romans as Sopianae, it was a significant Christian settlement. Later conquered by the Ottomans, it has important Turkish architecture.
