Samuel Pierpont Langley (1834-1906, right), American astronomer and aviation pioneer, with Charles Manly (1876-1927) his chief mechanic and pilot. They are aboard the houseboat that was used to launch the second manned test flight of the full-scale Langley aerodrome on 8th December 1903. The flight failed with the aerodrome crashing into the river seconds after launch.
