Member of an Ebola survey team taking a blood sample from a local during the 1976 outbreak in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo (then Zaire). The disease first appeared simultaneously in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nzara, Sudan. EVD is a severe and often fatal disease with symptoms including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea and haemorrhaging (internal bleeding). It is spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. There is no cure for the disease, but three quarters of patients can recover if provided with sufficient medical support. The total number of cases in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976 was 318, with a death rate of 88 per cent.
