This plant is very common along the seashore of Porto Eico. Itresembles in leaf and flower characteristics the cultivated species ofthe same genus. It has for many years been considered valuable asa cover crop and cultivated for that purpose. On light sandy soil itgrows vigorously, sending out long creeping vines and an extensiveroot system, both of which assist in holding the soil which is natur-ally easily washed and blown. Its culture could be increased withprofit in these places. The climbing vines make an excellent screenfor light and wind, and for this purpose are often planted nearverandas or windows. It is valuable also for planting ornamentallyin sections where the soil is sandy, as it is prolific in reddish-purpleflowers which are borne in racemes of 12 to 20 flowers each. C. obtusifolia can be easily distinguished from C. rusiosperma^another wild species which is
