Originally known as North Hinksey House, the so-called Cauldwell Castle was erected in 1848 on Folly Bridge Island on the Thames. It was built as for Joseph Caudwell, an eccentric Oxford accountant who may have planned it as a folly to match the name of the bridge. It has a checquered history, and is noted today for its bizarre architecture and number of plaster statues, including, on the rooftop, a figure of Atlas who has unfortunately lost his globe.
