Woolf steam engine, 19th century. Illustration of the double-acting cylinders of a Woolf steam engine. This high-pressure compound steam engine design was invented by British engineer Arthur Woolf (1766-1837). Woolf patented his invention in 1804. Artwork from 'Chaudieres et Machines a Vapeur' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
