Early human mandible. Mandible (jaw bone) from an early hominid found in the Sima del Elefante excavation, one of the archaeological sites at Atapuerca, Spain. Sima del Elefante is the site where the earliest known evidence of European Hominid occupation has been found (as of 2011). This mandible and stone tools were found in layers dating from the Early Pleistocene, around million years ago.
