Stacks of monks newly washed dishes, Mahagandayon Monastery, Amarapura, Myanmar

In large academic monasteries, such as Mahagandayon, they will forgo the traditional form of the alms round in favor of offering food family-style at a table in dishes from which the monks can help themselves. Normally the food should be consumed before noon on the day it is donated. In Myanmar many monks still eat with their fingers rather than with Western eating implements, but conventional plates and bowls and silverware or chopsticks are also used for eating. This is a view of newly washed serving dishes stacked on racks for drying.
