Darkfield light micrograph (LM) of Light micrograph of Volvox aureus, a colonial green alga (Chlorophyte, Chlorophyta), with 'daughter colonies' or go

Darkfield light micrograph (LM) of Light micrograph of Volvox aureus, a colonial green alga (Chlorophyte, Chlorophyta), with 'daughter colonies' or gonidia developing inside, a form of asexual reproduction. The individual biflagellated cells that form the spherical colony work together in a coordinated fashion. There is differentiation of the cells with those on the top having bigger eyespots so the colony can swim towards the light and those near the 'south pole' specialized for reproduction. Magnification: x40 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
