After the death of his mother in1868, his father bought a home in the Boroughof Providence, now the first ward of Scranton,and there he attended what was known as theProvidence High School. It was, in fact, agraded school of ordinary character, and not aHigh School as we now designate them. Hespent something over two years at the StarkeySeminary, Yates county, N. Y., on the shore ofSeneca Lake. In the fall of 1872 he visited thefamily of John L. Graham, whose wife was EmmaHeermans, sister of Mr. Deans mother, at Janes-ville, Waseca county, Wis. Here he passed the re-quired examination for teaching, and took chargeof a district school for the four months winterterm. In the spring he extended his western. i)i:. (.. K. i)i:an trip as far as Junction City, Kansas, but findingno opening to enter on a business career hereturned home, resolved to pursue the study ofmedicine. In the fall of 1873 he entered Fort Edward Colle-giate Institute, Foit Edward, N. Y., and spentone year in preparatory study, and in the fall of1874, entered the medical department of theUniversity of Pennsylvania, at this celebrated school he graduated inMarch, 1877, receiving besides his degree of M. of the anatomical prizes for proficiency inthat department of study.
