Cartoon from Punch December 1868 by Du Maurier. The legend to the cartoon notes that Louis Figuier (author of \La Terre avant le Deluge\" 1862 which had been recently translated to English) recommended that children be taught with real examples from history rather than fairytales from the past. The cartoon notes humorously that one child, so educated, had not had a good nights sleep since. The Victorians found the creatures geology was discovering were more terrifying than the monsters of folklore."
