This able minister was the son ofthe Rev. John McClure, the first min-ister of the Methodist New Connexionin Ireland. L,eft an orphan at the ageof five, he early became an earnest be-liever, and in the year 1830 joined theministry. Seventeen years later he wassent out to Canada as assistant superin-tendent of missions. He was thriceelected president of the Conference, andfrom 1860 to 1870 he acted as tutor inthe institute. Next year he was sud-denly called to his rest. He left behindhim a high reputation for ripe scholar-ship and Christian meekness and piety. Although the system finally agreedupon brought the Canadian body largelyunder the influence of the New Con-nexion in England, yet the relation wasonly temporary, as complete independ-ence was provided
