Shopmen who arc not familiar with thevertical milling machine and who alwaysthink of the horizontal type when a mill-ing machine is mentioned will be inter-ested in the accompanying illustrations, which show the finishing of a connectingrod brass without the use of specialcutters. In Fig. i is shown a num-ber of rod brasses (five) clamped to themilling machine table and being faced byan inserted tooth mill. The rate of feed is7 inches per minute, and a mill of this type. brasses with the same mill as was used inthe first operation, but owing to the largeramount of surfaces being milled, the rateof feed is somewhat slower than are then reversed and the other sidefinished with the same mill. If it is de-sired to surface a box and leave a projec-tion near the pin, this can be done asshown in Fig. 5. In this case the twohalves are clamped together in the centerof the rotary table, and the round-nosedmill is used, which finishes the face andleaves a fillet around the projecting sur-face. 1 9 4 .^ 1^ -^•^^l .. ^-sr 1 ^^ ^-i, 1-— np 1 Tr| /\T| Best Yorkstab-e 1A1LUK STAY-BOLT IRONPISTON RODS AND AXLES.
