Occasionally, also,gems and uncut stones or crystals were inserted in the volute. The staff shown in the illustration is of a rather unusual form, havinga plainly-shaped round cross-piece at the top of the staff. The staff orstem itself is round, but the curve is four-sided in section with a delicatecresting on the outside. The ornamentation is translucent enamel on silver. Diamond-shapeddivisions fill the stem, in quatrefoils applied in separate plates and joinedat the points with flowers of beaten work, and each figure varied in knop or cross-piece has six quatrefoil pla
