Then, when it became a problem how to stowaway the people within reach of their work, the short stagewas supplemented by the omnibus. Next South Londonstretched itself out farther; it began to include Camberwell,Brixton, Stockwell, Clapham, and Wandsworth. These wereseparate suburbs lying each among its own gardens ; the in-habitants were not clerks, but principals and employers, sub-stantial merchants and flourishing shopkeepers.
