Callahan, Cincinnati, Ohio Colophony, resin, commonly known as rosin, is ohtaincd from tur-pentine hy distillation. In the process the oil of turpentine comes overand the rosin remains behind. Rosin varies in color from dark red-brownto black and white, according to its purity, and the degree of heat usedin its preparation. Chemically, it is the anhydrid of abietic acid. It hasthe physical and chemical properties common to all rosins. It softensat 176 degrees F. and fuses completely at 275 degrees F., is insoluble inwater; with difficulty is soluble in alcohol; freely soluble in chloroform,acetone, benzone, and fatty oils. The rosin that is best adapted to dental uses that I have been ableto find is that prepared by Barnardel for the use of the violinist. It isa French preparation, very near the color of dentin.
