Derrick Reutebuch, assigned to the 40th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, measures and cuts a piece of wood to be used to build quality-of-life products for the Afghan evacuees in support of Department of State-led Operation Allies Refuge at Doña Ana Village, near Fort Bliss, Tx. Soldiers from the 40th Engineer brigade built approximately 40 benches, 12 soccer goals and 30 sets of clothes lines. The Department of Defense, through Northern Command, and in support of the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for up to 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan.
