Zagros mountains. Coloured LANDSAT 5 satellite image of the Zagros mountain range and the city of Shiraz, Iran. North is at top. Cultivated and dense vegetation is coloured red. The geology is dominated by the folded Zagros mountains running in lines as ridges of more resistant rock etched by erosion. The Zagros mountains form an important section in a long chain of mountains stretching from the Atlantic to Indonesia. They are typical of a destructive tectonic plate boundary. At top left corner (blue/grey) is the city Shiraz, with its airport. At top frame are the blue coloured salt lakes of Maharlu (left) and Bakhtegan (at right). Photographed in September.
