Polystyrene insulating material. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Styrodur, an extruded polystyrene foam, whose cells (spaces seen here) are filled with air. As well as being an excellent thermal insulator this structure also acts as a barrier to moisture. Styrodur is manufactured by BASF. Magnification: x240 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
