Pelargonium leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a leaf of the ornamental plant Pelargonium ignes. The gland hairs (yellow) produce a highly aromatic oil which acts as a deterrent to predatory insects. The leaf also has protective thorns (purple). The main body of the leaf is covered in a layer of epidermal cells (green). Among these are stomata, small openings that regulate gas exchange between the leaf's interior and the atmosphere. Pelargoniums are popular ornamental plants due to their fragrant leaves and bright showy flowers. Magnification: x50 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
