The formmost commonly used is knownas a mortise door-bolt, consist-ing simply of a barrel-bolt in a cylindrical case, which is-. Perkinss Door-check,mouth Wrench Co. BOLTS. 45 mortised directly into the door-style and is operated by aspindle with turn-button or knob on the inner face of thedoor. In external appearance the various makes of mor-tised door-bolts are very much alike, though some are finishedso as to require no other mortising than can be done with anauger, while others require more hand-work in the application. Figure 56 illustrates a complete bolt, and also shows oneform of internal arrangement. When the bolt is thrown, theshoulder on the follow, B, is turned so as to bring it verynearly on a line with the centre of rotation of the spindle, thuslocking the bolt. The spring, C, tends to keep the shoulderfrom rising. The simplest and most ingenious mortise door-bolt whichhas come to our attention is the one manufactured by Sargent& Greenleaf, designatedas the Gem mortise-bolt, Figure 57.
