View NE of St David's Church, the parish church of Caldey Island, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK: the graves of monks & islanders are marked by simple wooden crosses. The nave & chancel are two simple squares with a heavy archway between. The W door of the nave is Norman & the foundations may date back to the C10th or earlier. With its thick walls & a strong door secured by a beam & bar hole, it may have served as a refuge against Viking raiders & later pirates. The porch is a later addition. Before extensive renovations in 1838 the simple church had become ruinous & was in use as a blackmith's shop. It was re-opened for worship in 1894 & the interior restored by Done Bushell in 1906. The red tiled roof & modern windows were added later, the stained glass in the 1920s. The church was originally dedicated to St Mary on the Seashore but a shallow arm of the sea has withdrawn.
