Blackpool Illuminations sees this seaside city of fun still buzzing with excitement and laughter long after other resorts have gone into winter hibernation. At 10 kilometers long and using over one million bulbs the Blackpool Illuminations are an awesome spectacle. 2012 was a special year for Blackpool Illuminations. It marked the centenary of the first public display of light in Blackpool. While the first display of ´electric sunshine´ in Blackpool was in 1879, when 8 arc lights shone on the promenade. It was in May 1912, to mark the opening of a new section of promenade by Princess Louise, 10,000 lights were festooned along the promenade. The light were such a huge success that the following September Blackpool Chamber of Commerce were persuaded to stage the ´Illuminations´ this was the beginning of Blackpool Illuminations. OWNERS of the princess-themed Cinderella carriages have had their dreams come true as they were granted free reign of the Promenade after a three month consultation – during which owners of traditional horse-drawn landaus campaigned to have the novelty carriages banned from Blackpool. They claimed they were unsafe and damaged their own trade, Blackpool Council decided they would stay. But owners who wish to add to the current three carriages will have to report to Blackpool Council before taking to the road – and will have to make alterations including better indicators. Julie Brown, who brought the first Cinderella carriages to Blackpool, said: "I'm overwhelmed. "It means we can stop worrying now. Children on the Promenade love them, it makes their day to ride on them. "We have to change the indicators and make them higher, so they are more visible, but that's fine.
