Carotid endarterectomy surgery. Close-up of the exposed carotid artery (centre) of a patient undergiong an endarterectomy. Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical technique for removing obstructions (such as plaques) that are causing stenosis (narrowing) within the lower neck portion of the carotid artery. If these obstructions were not removed they could cause a stroke. Here a patch is being sewn into the artery after the plaque was removed.
