Lycaenops carnivore. Illustration of a one-metre-long carnivorous therapsid (mammal-like reptile) of the genus Lycaenops wandering a mountainous mid-Permian landscape 270 million years ago in what is today South Africa. This animal weighs around 15 kilograms. Vegetation includes various ferns forming ground cover, as well as a large cycad (far right).
