Toprovide for ihcm it was necessary to extend the wheel base ofthe truck from 8 ft. to 8 ft. 8 in. Because of the great amountof room required by tlie motors, blower apparatus, etc., it wasnecessary to do away with the brakchead tie-bars, or brakeljcams, and to arrange the tension rods for the outside brakeheads tostraddle the wheel as shown in the drawing. This applicationalso made it possible to change the construction at the ends and the gear wheel, which meshes with the motor pinion, isnow fastened to the axle rather than on the projection ofthe wheel hub. It is necessary to provide a blower apparatus to cool thelarge motors which are used. The blowers are fastened to theunderframe of the body of the car near the center and thedraft is carried through a duct formed by the box-shapedcenter girder of the car between this point and the p:.. ^ Pour-WHee, Stee, Passenger Car Tr^. ^-a^- -^Unaer Motor Cars on of ,, of the side frames and the end rail. The details ot tins designare presented in order to show how the four-wheel standardtruck for use under heavy coaches could be preserved m itsgeneral features and be arranged for use under the heavymodern electric motor cars. The drawing shows the use ofspoke wheels. Recent practice has changed these to plate wheels. From the latter point a duct extends laterally from each sideof the center girder, delivering the air where it is needed. Themotor leads pass through holes in the truck bolster close tothe center plate so that the curving of the truck creates theleast possible amount of distortion in the leads. Fortunatelythe necessity for making some such provision was foreseen a 574 RAILWAY AGE GAZETTE, MECHANICAL EDITION Vol. number of years ago and it has not been necessary to makeany important modifications
