The com-mission met at Washington. There were ninemen present at the meeting, including thecommissioners: Governor , Tiniothy O. Howe, Senator Philetus Sawyer—thenmember of the lowei house and on the com-mittee of commerce having in charge therivers and harbors—Jerry Rusk, member ofcongress; Senators Alexander Ramsey andWilliam Windom, and the Lnce, mayor of Duluth, Ex-mayorJoshua B. Culver, and B. S. ThisaiTay of noted men indicates the importanceof the subject under consideration, and the. S. IMSSKLL. public interest in the result of the delibera-tions of the conference. Of the nine menpresent only two survive—Alexander Ram-sey and Mr. Russell.
