Legs of a patient showing meningiococcal septiceamia, a rash associated with severe meningitis, or meningococcaemia. The rash, or purpura, is the result of bleeding into the skin from small blood capillaries. The individual purple spots of the rash are called petechiae. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the lining that encloses the brain and spinal is caused by viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms include intense headaches, fever, loss of appetite, intolerance to light and sound and rigidity of muscles. In severe cases convulsions, vomiting and delirium leading to death follow.
