Weather balloon launch. This weather balloon is one of several unmanned driftsonde balloons that were launched from Zinder, Niger, as part of the AMMA (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses) project. Each balloon carries a gondola (not seen) containing instrument packages, which are dropped into storms in the tropical Atlantic region. Each dropped package collects information about temperature, relative humidity and wind characteristics, allowing researchers to determine which storms could strengthen into hurricanes.
