At last they said, Some great under-water animal must have doneit. They saw a place where a tree trunk had beencut down and dragged away. They followed thispath or trail, and soon found footprints of ananimal. The footprints did not seem to themlike those of men, for there was a deep place atthe heel. The Indians did not know that these !3 H Stories of Pioneer Life. prints had been made by shoes with heels, forthey had never heard of such SOME GREAT UNDER-WATER ANIMAL MUST HAVE DONE IT. Soon they looked through the brush and sawthe animals at work. At first the Indians thoughtthat they were bears, but as they came a littlenearer, they thought that perhaps the workersmight be men. Yet they had hairy faces — agreat deal of hair hanging down from their chins. The Indians hid behind the trees and watchedthem. Some of the white men were piling uplogs while others were picking up sticks. The Indians were afraid to come nearer. They said: We saw some queer water animalsthat looked much like people. They had whitefaces with much hair on them. Some had redbodies and some were black. The Indians did not know that it was themens clothing that was red and black.
