Istanbul, Turkey -- Debris leftover from previous night's clashes litter the streets as hundreds attend the funeral of Ugur Kurt, a civilian bystander shot by police during yesterday's protests in the tumultuous Istanbul neighbourhood, Okmeydani. The neighbourhood, heavily populated by Alevis (Allawite) is the focus of urban renewal, yet the residents do not succumb to pressure from real estate companies and sign their properties away. At a prime spot, police violence is rampant in the neighbourhood, officials claiming that illegal groups use the area as a base. Turkish Alevis are a secular sect, and are not necessarily favored by the conservative government. Photo by Bikem Ekberzade
