Painted rood screen depicting Ss James the Less & Philip, heavily defaced during the iconoclasm of the Civil War, St Peter's Church, Belaugh, Norfolk


The painted rood screen at Belaugh, Norfolk is one of many in the county famous for this form of iconography. It depicts the apostles of jesus. Reputedly this screen was added in the 16th century. During or following the English Civil War in the 17th century it is reported that a soldier loyal to Oliver Cromwell and describes in a letter to Sheriff Tofts of Norwich as a 'godly trooper', scratched off the faces of the apostles as he considered them to be idolatrous in a common act of iconoclasm during the age of the Commonwalth.
