About the same time, two half-breed Indians discovered theplacers at the mouth of Whiskey Run, a small creek which empties into the ocean aboutfive miles north of the Coquille river. After working them a short time, they sold themto the Macuamara brothers, it is said, for twenty thousand dollars. It was estimated thatmore than one hundred thousand dollars was taken from this one claim. The rumor ofthese rich miues having got abroad, thousands of miners flocked to them, and beganprospecting along the coast from Trinidad in California to the Umpqua river. Along thebeach near Whiskey Run, not less than a thousand men were congregated. A townsprang up at once, containing stores, lodging houses, saloons, restaurants, tents and cabinsin large numbers, which was named Randolph. The beach mining during this seasonwas very profitable
