The sturdy yeomanry notinstantly obeying his order, he advanced nearer, fired his pistol,flourished his sword, and ordered his soldiers to fire. The troopscheered, and inmiedrately fired ; several of the provincials fell, andthe rest dispersed. The British continuing to discharge their mus-kets after the dispersion, a part of the fugitives stopped, and returnedthe fire. Eight Americans were killed, three or four of them by thefirst discharge of the British, the rest after they had left the were also wounded. The British now pressed forward to Concord, and destroyed thestores ; but in their retreat they encountered the exasperated peoplewho had risen in a mass
