The Zodiacal Light Photographed.—The as-tronomer Quenisset, of the observatory at Nanterre,France, has succeeded in getting rarely successfulphotographs of-the zodiacal light, one of which is re-produced in the I£njas Selcctas (Barcelona). The bestobjective found for the purpose was that formed by thetwo piano-con vex lenses of a condenser for a stereopticon, and it must be stopped down 50 per cent. Extra rapidplates and an exposure not long enough to allow diffu-sion to take place are other requisites. The experimentmust be made in the shade of mountains, and prefer-ably in equatorial , where the zodiacal light isseen most intense. The photograph shows an almostglobular form, with the intensity of light diminishingtoward the upper portion. THE NEW BOOKS. NOTES ON RECENT AMERICAN PETER TLICH TCHAIKOVSKI. A FEW OF THE LATEST BIOGRAPHIES. MR. MODESTE TCHAIKOVSKI has found sevenhundred and fifty pages insufficient for his greatwork on the life and letters of his famous brother, TeterIlich Tchaikovski. The volume iscopiously illustrated, and contains many let-ters, documents, lists, analyses of operas, andexpressions of newspa-per opinion. Particu-larly interesting are theletters from Tchaikov-ski during his friend-ship and courtshipwith the woman towhom he never ad-dressed a personalgreeting, and also theaccount of his tour inAmerica. The greatRussians musical work is so full of the sincerely emotional and humanelements of his character that the story of his life andselections from his letters make reading almost as at-t
