Seven of these swarms were in Protec- tion Hives with the Inner Overcoats, all of which came through in perfect condition and without loss. Thirty of the swarms were in the hives without the Inner Overcoats and they suffered a loss of some 40% to 50%. This was a severe test, as the temperature went as low as 20 degrees below zero, for many weeks. The value of the bees that were lost, had they been saved, would have more than paid for new hives for the entire lot.
