The Rhododendron is one of the most beautiful plants in culti- vation, either when planted as a single specimen on the lawn, or in beds. Its heavy, dark green foliage is striking, both in winter and summer, to say nothing of the great masses of varied colored flowers, which are produced in large trusses on the ends of nearly every branch of the plant. The flowers open during the latter part of April and the early part of May, and as all the buds do not open at the one time, there is always a profusion of bloom for a period of several weeks. The finest effect is produced by planting in beds ; the number of plants in a bed is immaterial, though, naturally, the larger the bed and the more plants there are in it, the greater will be the It is a mistaken idea, that many have, that Rhododendrons are not hardy. Of course, as with many other trees and plants, some varieties will not stand our climate; but we have been handling these plants so long that we are thoroughly conversant with those varieties best suited for this country, and on no account would we send anything else but the very best ones. Rhododendrons have a mass of small, hair-like, fibrous roots ; and it has been found that when the soil is light and good drainage given them, they do remarkably well. While they like plenty of water, they are averse to having it stagnant about the roots.
