Flowers at the Monastery of Arkadia on the Island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Monastery of Arkadia on the Island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. Cretan people were massacred here in the fight against the Turks in the cause of freedom. The black headdress worn by Cretan men with tassels represent the tears of the Cretan people after this massacre, so that their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Crete is in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Now a holiday island once it was the ruler of the Seas. The Minoan civilisation was wiped out by the explosion of the volcano on the island of Santorini in 1460 BC. This gave rise to the legend of Atlantis. The Minoans worshipped the Minotaur, part Bull part man, and the Greek hero Theseus killed the Minotaur with help from Ariadne. Minoan pottery and jewellery was highly sophisticated and their capital was Knossos where a beautiful palace has been discovered. The treasures are in the museum at Heraklion. They had 2 languages only one of which has been deciphered, the other remains a mystery.
