Monea Castle whch has Scottish style was built for Malcolm Hamilton and completed in 1618. In the early 17th century, during the time of King James I of England, there was a period known as the "Plantation of Ulster" when English and Scottish Protestants settled on land confiscated from the Gaelic Irish. Later in 1641, during the Irish Rebellion, the castle was briefly seized back by Irish forces.
