Ewald's Hill (Ewaldshøj) in Rungsted Kyst, Denmark. A memorial of the Danish poet and writer Johannes Ewald.
"Ewald's Hill" (Ewaldshøj) in Rungsted Kyst with a great view over the Sound - and Rungsted Harbour. Johannes Ewald (18 November 1743 – 17 March 1781) - normally regarded as the most important Danish poet of the 2nd half of the 18th century. (Pre-Romantic period). However, his life was troubled by alcoholism and poor health. He lived in a fisherman's cottage nearby (Ewald's Cottage - unfortunately demolished some years ago). Ewald had his meals at the inn and sat often writing on a hill in the garden of the inn - the property later named Rungstedlund. This is the real Ewald's Hill. Around 1800 the property ceased to be an inn and was named Rungstedlund. It was bought by Karen Blixen's father in 1879 . Karen Blixen was born here and Rungstedlund became her home after her years in Africa,. Her grave is under the tall beech at the corner of the real Ewald's Hill in Rungstedlund. Johannes Ewald lived different places before his death - and he was buried at the Trinitatis Cemetery (Trinitatis Kirkegård) in Copenhagen. This "fake" Ewald's Hill (photo) - just opposite the present Rungsted Inn at Rungsted Harbour - was established later as a memorial with a sign and a monument on the top - but perhaps you should visit the real one at Karen Blixen's grave and see where Johannes Ewald wrote his poetry. At that time the hill had a view and a summerhouse. Unfortunately not very photogenic.
