In the vicinity of Silver Reef thelower 200 to 300 feet of the Painted Desertformation consists of weak shale and sand-stone, which have been deeply eroded and un-derlie Leeds Valley. Overlying this shale seriesis a massive sandstone varying from reddishto gray, which outcrops as a rather prominentridge (Butte Reef). Between this sandstone U. S.
