GULF OF OMAN (March 18, 2019) – Marine Gunnery Sgt. Nathaniel Platek, left, an administration chief, and Sgt. Michael Chiarappa, the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear team leader, both with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, tap gloves before free sparring during a Martial Arts Instructor Course in the well deck of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD-3). The course ensures the Marines can properly and effectively progress their peers through the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. Marines and Sailors with the 22nd MEU and Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group are currently deployed to the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
