Portrait of Pachacuti or Pachacutec, Ninth Sapa Inca, Peruvian, oil painting, mid 1800's

It is thought that the famous Inca site of Machu Picchu was built as an estate for Pachacuti, also known as Pachacutec. This portrait is based on Spanish historian and chronicler Antonio Herrera’s Historia general de los hechos de los castellanos en las islas y tierra firme del mar océano (General History of the Deeds of the Castillians on the Islands and Mainland of the Ocean Sea Known as the West Indies) first published in 1615.
