Louis-Joseph Chevrolet (1878-1941), race car driver and automobile manufacturer. Chevrolet was born in Switzerland and grew up in France. He then emigrated to the USA via Canada. By 1905 he was racing cars for Fiat and later Buick. He co-founded the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in 1911, with William Durant of Buick. By 1915, Chevrolet had sold his stake in the company. With his younger brothers, also race car drivers, he founded the Frontenac Motor Corporation in 1916. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The bulk of the Bain images date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
