The bout, billed as the "Fight of the Century", took place on March 17 1897 in front of around 5,000 spectators in Carson City, Nevada. Fitzsimmons, the challenger, won by KO in the 14th round after hitting champion Corbett, nicknamed "Gentleman Jim", with his famous "solar plexus punch".
