Gross pathology of a human liver with severe cirrhosis, a chronic progressive disease of the entire liver characterized by loss of parenchyma and nodular parenchymal regeneration. The liver shows a notable atrophy and an irregular surface with many small regenerating nodules (Laennec's micronodular cirrhosis). The disease leads to hepatic insufficiency and portal hypertension.
