At theage of fourteen he left home to workin the tie camps of the Union PacificRailroad in Idaho and Wyoming. Afterthis he lived for several years in Gen-tile Valley and Soda Springs, Idaho,and in the spring of 1887 went toMarsh Center to close out the busi-ness affairs of Bishop Melvin L. Gru-well, who had moved to Mexico. AtMarsh Center he became acquainted with Mary Hawkins (daughter of CarlW.
