Vander Byl. WESTERN TUR or CAUCASIAN IBEX (Capra severtzowi). Of the two peculiar kinds of wild goats inhabiting the Caucasusand locally known as ture, the present species is easily recognised bythe approximation in the form of its horns to those of true ibex, andthe uniform chestnut-brown colour of the male in the summer coat ;the chin, beard, and lower part of the legs being dark brown. Inadults the beard, when fully developed, is long, straight, and at shoulder, about 42 inches. Distribution.—The western half of the main chain of the typical race {C. severtzowi typicd) inhabits the mountains westof Elbruz. It is the larger, and has the knots on the hornsmoderately developed.
